Work on the hooker «St. Peter», 1742
In 2021, 280 years have passed since the discovery of the Commander Islands by the naval detachment of the Second Kamchatka Expedition. In summer 1740, two packetboats St. Peter and St. Paul were built in Okhotsk. In June 1741, the ships sailed to North America and both reached their intended goal. On the way back, St. Peter under the command of Captain-Commander V. Bering fell into a series of strong autumn storms. Eventually, it received significant damage and was dismantled on the coast of an uninhabited island known today as Bering Island. To return to Kamchatka the team built a new vessel – the hooker St. Peter (members of this expedition called it «gukor»). The construction took place in the same place as wintering – in Commander Bay. Of the 77 people who went on the sea voyage 46 survived. They returned to the Petropavlovsk harbor in September 1742.
